Four dayparts on Detroit time: Morning Rise, Daytime Groove, Evening Build and Late Night Deep, and the sound that defines each block of the 313 LIVE day.

Detroit doesn’t sound the same at every hour, and neither does 313 LIVE. The station runs 24/7, but the day is divided into four dayparts, each with its own character, from the soft focus of early morning to the long, deep arc after midnight. This guide explains what each one sounds like, who it’s for, and how to catch the hours that suit you.

All times are Detroit time (Eastern). If you’re listening from elsewhere, the schedule page shows your local time under each slot.

How the dayparts work

When no DJ is broadcasting live, the stream comes from Studio 13, the station’s programmed rotation. Studio 13 always draws on the station’s core library of Detroit techno, house and electro. On top of that, each daypart adds its own dedicated set of records, chosen for that time of day.

So the dayparts are moods rather than walls. You might hear a Detroit classic at noon or a deep cut at dinner time. The daypart sets the drift: brighter in the morning, steadier through the day, harder in the evening, deeper overnight. Listener requests can land in any of them.

Morning Rise: 6 AM to 10 AM ET

The sound: deep house, nu-disco, melodic electronic records and Detroit house classics, with a handful of deeper cuts.

The feeling: the city waking up. Morning Rise is warm and rounded, with grooves that move but don’t push. Chords do a lot of the work. It’s music with a pulse, built for the kettle, the shower and the first coffee.

Best for: getting ready, the morning commute, the first emails of the day, a walk with headphones before the streets fill up.

Listening tip: house that sounds gentle in the morning often hides serious craft: the swing of the hi-hats, the way a bassline sits behind the kick. Turn it up slightly and you’ll hear why Detroit house heads take this stuff seriously. Our piece on why BPM isn’t the whole story explains what to listen for.

Daytime Groove: 10 AM to 6 PM ET

The sound: deep house, disco-rooted house and jacking grooves.

The feeling: steady motion. Daytime Groove is the station’s longest daypart, and it’s designed to hold a room for hours without wearing you out. The rhythm carries you; the records reward attention without demanding it.

Best for: working, studying, the studio, the shop floor, the long middle of the day. It’s also the lane where the family tree between Chicago and Detroit house is easiest to hear: the jack, the soul samples, the disco DNA.

Listening tip: if a groove grabs you, don’t wait to look it up later. The recently played page logs every track, and the Find link takes you to a Bandcamp search so you can buy the record while you’re thinking about it.

Evening Build: 6 PM to midnight ET

The sound: techno, tech house, Detroit classics, electro and ghettotech.

The feeling: pressure rising. As the work day ends, the kick drum gets heavier and the tempo climbs. Evening Build is where the station sounds most like the city going out: dinner, pre-game, the drive downtown, the hours before the club. It’s also where Detroit’s sharper edges show: the machine funk of electro and the fast, raw energy of ghettotech.

Best for: cooking with the volume up, the gym, getting ready to go out, or a night in that doesn’t feel like one.

Listening tip: this is the daypart to study peak-time craft. Listen for tension and release, the records that make you check the artist name mid-mix. We break that down in Peak-Time Techno: What Makes a Track Radio-Weapon Grade, and the electro lineage is in Electro in the 313.

Late Night Deep: midnight to 6 AM ET

The sound: deep house, minimal and deep tech, melodic records and Detroit electro.

The feeling: time stretches out. Late Night Deep is for the hours when the city is quiet and the listening gets personal. Grooves lengthen, space opens up, and repetition becomes hypnotic rather than boring. Detroit has a long tradition of reductive, patient music, from Robert Hood’s minimal techno to the deep house of the afterhours, and this daypart lives in it.

Best for: night shifts, late studio sessions, the drive home, insomnia, and listeners in Europe and beyond for whom Detroit’s midnight is morning or midday.

Listening tip: give it an hour, not a song. Afterhours music works in arcs. Read Afterhours Detroit: The Art of the Slow-Burn Groove and Robert Hood and the Minimal Gospel of Detroit for the background.

Live sets, requests and the schedule

When a DJ broadcasts live, the live set replaces Studio 13 for its duration, and the player badge switches from “Studio 13” to “Live.” The schedule page always shows what’s on now and next, so check it when you want to know what’s coming.

Requests play during Studio 13 hours. Search the library on the requests page and your pick joins the queue, whatever daypart you’re in. To keep the flow intact, match your request to the hour: a peak-time techno record lands better in Evening Build than at 7 a.m. Our request etiquette guide has more on that.

Finding your hours

Most listeners settle into a daypart that fits their life: mornings for the commute, Daytime Groove at the desk, Late Night Deep for the overnight shift.
